About us

We founded the Tonković Winery in 2006 in order to revive kadarka, a historical grape variety from Vojvodina and Slavonija. As a heritage winery, we have chosen Kadarka, because it is a part of the culture of the region and its terroir.

"As a heritage winery, we have chosen kadarka, because it is a part of the culture of the region and its terroir."

Kadarka

Kadarka is a red grape variety that has played an important role in the history of winegrowing in Bačka. In the mid 1800s, it was widely planted across the Panonian Plain, and it began disappearing after World War II because its thick clusters and susceptibility to disease make it very difficult to cultivate. Using simple techniques in our vineyards, we have elevated kadarka to a new level.

About the winery

The Tonković Winery is buried under a sand dune next to the vineyard and the farm. All of our wooden barrels have a volume of 300 litres and are made of Hungarian oak. We regularly buy new barrels, which we use for Rapsodija and Icon. All the work in the winery, including the pressing, is done manually.

Terroir

The Subotica-Horgoš Sands are located in the northern part of Bačka in Vojvodina, right next to the Hungarian border. It is the southernmost part of the large sandy area stretching between the Danube, Tisza, Budapest and northern Bačka.
